Utah teen in critical condition after ‘car surfing’ accident as concerns grow over online trend

Alarming Trend: Teens Risking Lives for Social Media Attention

A tragic incident in Utah has shed light on the growing danger of "car surfing," a reckless social media trend that has claimed the life of a 15-year-old girl. The story serves as a stark reminder of the risks young people are willing to take in pursuit of online fame and attention, often with devastating consequences.

Chasing Likes at the Cost of Safety

The Tragic Accident

Ava Broadhead, a 15-year-old from Utah, is currently fighting for her life after a car surfing accident left her with severe brain trauma. The teen, who was looking forward to attending homecoming, is now in a medically induced coma and facing a long road to recovery, as she must relearn basic skills like walking, talking, and even tying her shoes.According to the GoFundMe page set up for Ava, the accident occurred when she was "attempting 'car surfing,' a dangerous trend that has unfortunately become popular among teenagers." The page states that Ava "was thrown from the car, suffering severe brain trauma" in an incident that was "meant to be a moment of fun" but has now left her in a hospital bed, "with half her head shaved, fighting to recover."

The Alarming Trend

The incident has raised eyebrows across the nation, with many pointing to the role of social media in promoting these dangerous trends among young people. Sgt. Aymee Race of the Unified Police Department told Fox 13 that "unfortunately, with social media, there are ebbs and flows to these types of trends and right now this trend has been picking up."Ben Ricciardi, the CEO and founder of Times10, echoed these concerns, stating that the dangerous internet trends are "alarming." He explained that "things move very quickly" on social media, with "new trends pop[ping] up daily, both dangerous ones and non-dangerous ones." Ricciardi cited the "I show speed" trend, where people jump over speeding cars, as another example of the risks young people are willing to take.

The Pursuit of Attention

Ricciardi believes that the youth's desire for attention and fame is a driving factor behind these dangerous trends. He explained that "the youth wants to be the center of attention, which is what social media has created." The idea of being "the first onto something" and potentially gaining fame or popularity among their peers is a powerful motivator for many young people. This pursuit of attention and validation through social media has led to a concerning trend where young people are willing to put their lives at risk in the hopes of going viral or gaining a following. The case of Ava Broadhead serves as a tragic reminder of the consequences of this behavior and the urgent need to address the underlying issues driving these dangerous trends.

The Importance of Education and Awareness

As the car surfing trend continues to gain traction, it is crucial that parents, educators, and community leaders take proactive steps to educate young people about the risks involved. Raising awareness about the dangers of these trends and providing alternative, safe outlets for self-expression and social engagement can help mitigate the appeal of these risky behaviors.Additionally, social media platforms must also play a role in addressing the problem by implementing stricter policies and content moderation measures to prevent the spread of dangerous challenges and trends. By working together, we can help protect our youth and ensure that the pursuit of online attention does not come at the cost of their safety and well-being.
