PG&E Customers Face Another Potential Bill Hike
PG&E customers are on the verge of seeing yet another increase in their utility bills. This would mark the fifth rate hike within a single year, raising concerns among consumers and advocates alike. ABC7 News delved into the details of where the money is going and explored potential ways to curb future increases.

Unraveling the Impact of PG&E's Rate Hikes on Customers

Background on PG&E's Rate Hikes

In San Francisco, PG&E customers are facing a challenging situation. As reported by ABC7 News, if approved, this would be the fifth rate hike this year. The most recent hike added an average of to customer bills, and now, an additional .33 per month is proposed to cover vegetation management costs. A California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) graph shows a significant increase in PG&E's average customer bill, doubling between January 2018 and January 2023. This continuous rise in rates is making it increasingly difficult for customers to manage their electricity expenses.

Lee Trotman from The Utility Reform Network (TURN) expressed his concerns, stating, "It's death by a million cuts. It's just a nonstop rate hike after a rate hike." The rising costs have put a strain on customers, with an average of more being paid compared to the beginning of the year.

Calls for Reform and Legislative Actions

In 2020, state Sen. Scott Wiener authored a bill to explore a public takeover of PG&E, highlighting years of inadequate infrastructure investment that led to wildfires and other issues. He emphasized, "This all stems from PG&E's failure over many, many years to invest in basic infrastructure. The company has a real problem." In 2023, Wiener proposed legislation to expedite utility connections for new developments, including public parks and homeless shelters.

PG&E declined an on-camera interview but stated that the proposed funding would enable the company to connect to 13,000 new customers this year, compared to 9,800 in 2022. However, customers are left wondering what more can be done to address the issue.

What Customers Can Do

TURN encourages customers to voice their concerns at public hearings. State Sen. Wiener noted that the legislature and the governor have the power to set rules around rates and direct the CPUC. The question remains whether they have the political will to do so, as PG&E and their supporters still hold significant influence in Sacramento.

Customers are actively seeking solutions to mitigate the impact of these rate hikes. They are looking for ways to reduce their electricity consumption and find more affordable alternatives. The CPUC is set to consider the latest rate increase on Dec. 19, and if approved, the hike won't be reflected in bills until 2026. In the meantime, customers are left waiting and hoping for some relief.
