Before delving into this analysis, it is important to state that my literary tastes lean towards the unpretentious. I find pleasure in lighthearted airport reads and consider my ideal vacation book to be the equivalent of reality television. Therefore, my perspective is far from highbrow. I have a fondness for romantic comedies that are a bit over-the-top, and anything that evokes the early 2000s era. A well-executed montage scene accompanied by Madonna's music is enough to win me over. This explains why the film adaptation of 'The Devil Wears Prada' holds a significant and cherished spot in my heart.
Upon commencing my tenure at British Vogue, a recurring question from acquaintances, often accompanied by a scrutinizing glance at my attire, was: 'What is it truly like?' This query invariably translated to 'How much like 'The Devil Wears Prada' is it?' While I have yet to encounter a cerulean belt or a manuscript from a famous wizarding saga circulating the office (though a luxury shoe brand's gift bag did appear recently), I cannot deny the profound influence the 2006 film had on my career aspirations and even my hair color choices. My journey at Vogue has, thus far, been free of any tyrannical bosses, but there have certainly been instances in my personal and professional life that felt like a direct homage to the film. For instance, the time I was struck by a vehicle and subsequently dressed as the bruised, red-haired, limping assistant for Halloween (sadly, without the iconic luxury scarves).
Despite often playing a popular 2000s pop song during moments of despair, there remained an emptiness in my life that only the original characters could fill. Consequently, I decided it was time to address that void by immersing myself in the creatively titled literary follow-up to the original book: 'Revenge Wears Prada'. The novel picks up a decade after the protagonist's dramatic departure from her high-stakes fashion job, following one too many chauffeured trips around Paris. She is now the editor of a glossy bridal publication and has entered matrimony with a publishing scion, a character vaguely reminiscent of a television drama’s wealthy family, complete with outdoor interests and an empathetic nature (he abstains from alcohol). Within a few chapters, I found myself thoroughly disengaged with the bland archetype that was her new husband, though at least the dreadful, cheese-loving ex-boyfriend from the first film had vanished to another city, along with his culinary exploits and unsupportive demeanor.
The book's narrative meanders through time, shifting between the protagonist's unexplained persistent stomach ailment (which is revealed to be pregnancy), her lavish wedding costing a considerable sum, and an unexpected encounter with a former colleague at a basic cooking class. After a brief exchange of animosity, they forge a bond over their shared experience with their formidable ex-boss and leave the soufflé-making session arm-in-arm, deciding to launch a bridal magazine together. While it is acknowledged that the year 2013 was a different era, the chosen name for their publication still strikes me as utterly uninspired, regardless of the period. It is also difficult to believe that sophisticated women would spend their leisure time being taught how to prepare simple breakfast dishes.
The remainder of the novel dissolves into a hazy panorama of chic, open-plan apartments, exotic photoshoots, and nostalgic glimpses into the fashion closet. Predictably, the former colleague betrays the protagonist, the formidable ex-boss remains her tyrannical self, and somehow, the protagonist ends up reconciling with her regrettable ex-partner. Despite devouring the book in merely two days, it left me yearning to rewatch the original film rather than reach for the next installment in the series, titled 'When Life Gives You Lululemons.'
The true brilliance of 'The Devil Wears Prada' lies not in its rather simplistic storyline, but in the intricate details of its costume design, the subtle, disdainful glances, and its soundtrack that resembles a high-end perfume advertisement. Enlivened by an eclectic mix of early 2000s music, the rhythmic clatter of high heels, and iconic designer boots, these initially two-dimensional characters acquire depth. Without the elaborate accessories and striking makeup, the characters lose their vitality. On paper, the formidable ex-boss is reduced to a cruel and heartless figure, while the former colleague becomes an empty, boss-worshipping skeletal presence whose primary objective is to restrict the protagonist's eating habits (an unfair simplification of the character brought to life by the actress, whose performance was anything but flat, especially with that vibrant blue eyeshadow).
Given all of this, I hold a cautious optimism for the impending return of 'The Devil Wears Prada' to the big screen. Fortunately, it appears the producers have wisely abandoned the bridal magazine subplot, and the former colleague is now a senior executive at a luxury fashion conglomerate (a far more believable trajectory), while the formidable ex-boss grapples with the decline of print media. Although the paparazzi images released so far do not inspire much hope for the inclusion of avant-garde fashion in the open-plan office setting, I am content to see the protagonist back in focus without having to endure the remaining books in the series. Setting aside holiday reading, I will certainly not be revisiting 'Revenge Wears Prada' in the near future.
